During the past week guest artist Miki Orihara, Bessie Award winning principal dancer at the Martha Graham Dance Company, was in residence at Kanopy Dance to set selections from â€˜Appalachian Spring’ one of the program highlights for the Feb 6-8 concert. (This is the 70th birthday of Appalachian Spring, Grahamâ€™s beloved masterwork and â€œa testimony to the simple fineness of the human spirit.â€ Appalachian Springâ€˜s world premiere was October 30, 1944, with music by Aaron Copland).
As a special treat for dance and live music enthusiasts, Ms. Orihara will also be performing “Memory Current” created for her by NYC choreographer Adam Barruch and which she debuted recently at her solo concert ‘Resonance” at LaMaMa, the world renowned experimental theatre in NYC. Accompanying Ms. Orihara on piano will be with guest artist, Senri Oe.
Ms. Orihara will conduct a master class open to the public at Kanopyâ€™s studios, 341 State Street on Saturday, February 7 from 11AM-12:30PM. The fee is $25. Please register on line at kanopydance.org or call 608.255.2211.

Miki Orihara is best known for her 25-year career as Principal Dancer in the Martha Graham Dance Company, for which she earned a Bessie Award in 2011. She has performed on Broadway in â€œThe King and Iâ€, and with Elisa Monte, SITI Company, PierGroupDance, Lotuslotus and in productions by Twyla Tharp, and Robert Wilson. Orihara has presented her choreography in New York and Tokyo most recently in her solo concert, â€œResonanceâ€ at La MaMa, NYC. She is a sought after teacher and coach working with the Kirov Ballet, Japanâ€™s New National Theater Ballet School, the Ailey School, New York University, The Hartt School, Lâ€™ete de la Danse (Paris) and is Dance Director for Mishmash*Miki Orihara.
