A contemporary opera inspired by the lives and deaths of adventurer Isabelle Eberhardt

A ravishing, multi-media event, Song from the Uproar unfolds in surreal episodes drawn from the journals of Swiss adventurer Isabelle Eberhardt (1877-1904). Isabelle’s writings reveal how her nomadic experiences in North Africa mirrored her quest for self-discovery during her short, remarkable life. Featuring mezzo-soprano Colleen Brooks as Isabelle, with Wild Space dancers, Milwaukee Opera Theatre singers, and a chamber ensemble that includes piano, electric guitar, clarinet, flute, bass and electronics, Song from the Uproar invites audiences into Isabelle’s dreams as she encounters love, loss, danger and sacrifice. Through poetic vignettes, expressive dance, and a shimmering score, Song from the Uproar honors a woman of indomitable spirit, who forged a life unlike anyone else’s, and whose story still resonates.
