Mini Dance Festival 2023

The Wisconsin Dance Council is most appreciative to all who applied to be part of the 2023 Mini Dance Festival!  We also extend much gratitude to the three panelists who adjudicated work on the following guidelines: originality, technical expertise, professionalism, and artistry.  The names and affiliation of each choreographer remained confidential.  Based on the Choreographic Works Criteria and the work of the panel of three professional artists from diverse dance genres, we are thrilled to announce the following curated choreographic works to be selected to participate at the WDC Dance Conference on October 21, 2023 at MYArts in Madison:

  • Apogee by Catey Ott Thompson (solo piece)
  • Wash by Morgan Williams (group piece)
  • Gottschalk Pas de Trois by Brian Norris (group piece)
  • TCB by Andi Bissen (solo piece)
  • Looking Backward/Moving Forward by Sarah Olson (group piece)
  • Full Moon by Maria Hackbarth (group piece)
  • We’re eating it now by Katleyn Altmann (solo piece)

We are impressed with the number of submissions and caliber of work.  Thank you to everyone who participated.  A reminder, all revenue generated from this festival is designated to the WDC Scholarship Fund.  We look forward to seeing everyone October 21 at MYArts in Madison!

Criteria

Selection Criteria
1. Up to 6 pieces will be selected to be presented live at the October 21 Event;
final selection will include works by Professional Choreographers (with or without
student dancers) and works by Student Choreographers
2. No more than two processional companies will be selected
3. Only one work per studio/school/independent artists may be chosen
4. No Dance on Film will be accepted in this current year
5. Winners will be informed by August 1, 2023
6. Winners must register and pay to participate at the conference. See rates below.
(All proceeds will benefit the WDC’s Scholarship Fund)
7. In order to enhance the experience of the young dancers, professional companies
will offer a talk for conference participants during the day
Choreographic Works

1. Must be an original choreography
2. Group or solo works will be accepted
3. Only two submissions per choreographer
4.  Independent artists, studios, and schools may submit more than one piece
5. The work may be choreographed by independent artists, studio/school instructors, or students
6. All choreographic works presented will be adjudicated equally
7. All works should not exceed 3 min. for solos and 5 min. for group works

Submission

1. All works must be submitted by June 30, 2023 in order to be considered
2. All members and non-members of WDC are welcomed to submit their works
3. Fees (per submission):
a. $40 for WDC Members
b. $60 for Public
c. $80 for Professional Companies which includes conference registration and participation.
A talk for conference participants during the day will be required.
4. All submissions must be via password protected Vimeo. Google Drive. YouTube
5. Video submissions should ONLY include the title of the piece
6. All program information pertinent to the work should accompany the submission and contain:

Deliberation

1. A panel of three professional artists from diverse dance genres
2. Adjudicators will only have access to the title of the work
3. All works will be adjudicated following these guidelines
a. Originality
b. Technical expertise (in any of the techniques chosen)
c. Professionalism
d. Artistry
4. The panel will curate 6 choreographic works to be selected to participate at the WDC Dance Conference on October 21, 2023 at MyArts in Madison, Wisconsin

Copyrights

1. Due to artistic copyrights issues, none of the selected works will be shared in any of the WDC Social Media platforms unless the music is original or public domain
